Why does most corn from the grocery store taste bland?
Once harvested, the sugars in the kernels quickly begin converting to starch. It's helpful to keep corn refrigerated to slow down the conversion process. What are some helpful growing tips for Northern California gardeners? MOVE IT IN! Since corn is wind-pollinated, 3-4 short rows planted closely together will have much greater success than long, spaced out rows. MULCH! Adequate moisture guarantees heartier ears. Mulching around the corn will help the soil retain moisture, especially helpful in the hotter months. When should you harvest? You'll see full-sized kernels peeking out at the tip of the ear and silks start to dry and turn brown.
